How to Respond to a 1-Star Review About Poor Workmanship (Salon)
"They didn't listen" is the four-word version of almost every bad salon review. The customer feels unheard twice — once in the chair, once if your reply is generic. Here's how to answer so the next hundred clients see a salon that listens.
The review
"Asked for a trim, walked out with four inches gone. I kept saying 'just the ends' and the stylist nodded and kept cutting. I won't be back." — 1 star
Copy-paste template
"Just the ends" should mean just the ends, [Name] — I'm sorry we didn't listen. That's the whole job, and we missed it. If you're open to it, I'd love to have you back with our senior stylist for a complimentary consultation and reshape, on us. This is Maria, the owner — (555) 123-4567.
Why this works
- It quotes her own words back. Repeating "just the ends" shows the complaint was heard — the exact thing the review says didn't happen in the chair.
- It doesn't relitigate the haircut. "Maybe it was split ends" or "four inches is standard for a trim" would start a fight in public. The reply stays on the listening failure, which is undeniable.
- The fix is specific and senior. Not "come back and we'll try again" — a named senior stylist, a consultation first, complimentary. Future readers see a salon with standards, not desperation.
- Short. Salon clients skim. Five sentences is the whole job.
What not to do
- Don't defend the stylist's judgment. Even "she's our most experienced colorist" reads as picking your team over the client.
- Don't offer a full refund in the reply. A complimentary fix keeps them in your chair; a refund sends them to a competitor with your money.
- Don't ask what went wrong. She told you what went wrong. Asking again proves you didn't read it.
