How to Respond to a Fake 1-Star Review (Auto Repair Shop)
The review describes a transmission job you never did, or a visit nobody on your team remembers, and no invoice matches. Figuring out how to respond to a fake 1-star review at your auto repair shop is mostly about restraint: you can't prove a negative in public, but you can look calm, and that's what readers remember.
The review
Total scam. They wrecked my transmission and then refused to fix it. Don't take your car here or you'll regret it. — 1 star
Copy-paste template
We take a comment like this seriously, but we can't find a transmission repair matching this description in our records, and I want to make sure we're looking in the right place. If you can share the vehicle and the date of your visit, I'll pull the file myself. If it was meant for a different shop, no hard feelings. This is Walt, the owner — (555) 123-4567.
How to respond to a fake 1-star review (auto repair): why this works
- It states a fact, not an accusation. "We can't find it in our records" is neutral. It never says fake, liar or competitor, so even a real but confused customer can come back without losing face.
- It invites verification. Asking for the vehicle and date gives a genuine customer a way to be heard. Someone who made it up can't answer, and readers can see the difference.
- The owner's name and number are the proof. A shop with something to hide doesn't put the owner's direct line under a disputed review.
- Flag it separately. If the review seems to violate Google's review policies, you can report it from your Business Profile. Google decides what happens, and removal isn't guaranteed, so still post a calm reply in case it stays up.
What not to do
- Don't call it fake. You can't prove it publicly, and the accusation becomes the headline.
- Don't post customer or job details. Plate numbers, invoice totals and dates belong in a private conversation.
- Don't retaliate or reply in anger. Posting a counter-review or sarcasm makes you the story.
