How to Respond to a 1-Star Rating With No Comment (Auto Repair Shop)
This is an illustrative review scenario, not an actual customer review. Adapt the reply to the facts of your situation and replace the example names and phone numbers before posting.
A one-star rating with no words is the most frustrating review to get: you can't fix what you can't see, and every reader can see the star. If you're unsure how to respond to a 1-star review with no text at your auto repair shop, aim for short, calm and curious. The reply is mostly an open door.

Hi [Name], we saw your one-star rating and wish we knew what went wrong, because we'd like to fix it. If you're willing to tell us about your visit, whether the repair, the wait or the price, I'll look into it personally. This is Nate, the owner — call me at (555) 123-4567, or reply right here.
How to respond to a 1-star review with no text (auto repair): why this works
- It acknowledges the rating without guessing. Assuming it was about price or timing can be wrong, and a wrong guess in public looks careless.
- It gives them easy prompts. "The repair, the wait or the price" lowers the effort of answering. People who won't write a paragraph will often say one word.
- It's short. A long defensive reply to a no-text rating draws attention to it. Three sentences is proportional.
- It offers two routes back. A phone number for the person who wants to talk, and a public reply for the one who'd rather type, so nobody has to pick up the phone.
What not to do
- Don't guess the cause in public. "Sorry about the price" may be wrong, and it announces that you think you charge too much.
- Don't assume it's fake. Not every empty rating is malicious. Check your records first, and keep the tone friendly.
- Don't ignore it. A rating still pulls down your average, and an unanswered one looks like nobody's home.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a rating with no comment removed?
Not simply for lacking text. If it seems not to come from a real customer, you can report it to Google, but removal isn't guaranteed. Reply calmly in the meantime.
How do I find out who left a no-comment rating?
Google shows the reviewer's name. Search your shop system for it and for recent jobs. If you find a match, call them directly.
Should I reply at all if there's no text?
Yes, briefly. A short, curious reply shows readers you care, and it gives the customer an easy way to tell you what happened.
