How to Respond to a Fake 1-Star Review (Plumber)
A one-star review says you flooded a bathroom and refused to pay, and you have no record of the customer or the job. Knowing how to respond to a fake 1-star review as a plumber starts with staying calm, because readers see an accusation and your reply side by side. Stay professional, say what you can and can't find, and keep the door open.
The review
"Plumber flooded my bathroom, refused to pay for the damage, then stopped answering my calls. Total scam. Never use this company." — 1 star
Copy-paste template
Water damage in a bathroom is serious, [Name], and I want to understand what happened. I've searched our records for your name and number and can't find a job or an invoice under either, so I'm not able to look into it from here. If you can tell me the date and the address, or if it may have been another company, please call me. This is Ahmed, the owner, at (555) 123-4567, and if it was us, I'll look into it personally.
Why this works
- It doesn't accuse. Saying "I can't find a job under your name" states a fact without calling the reviewer a liar. Readers see someone who took a serious claim seriously.
- It takes the claim seriously anyway. Opening with the water damage shows you aren't brushing it off. A shrug would make a fake review look true.
- It leaves room for honest confusion. Reviewers sometimes mix up companies. Asking whether it may have been another company lets them back out without losing face.
- It sits alongside a flag, not instead of one. If you're confident the review is fake, you can also flag it for Google to review from your Business Profile. Removal isn't guaranteed, so the public reply still matters.
What not to do
- Don't call the review fake in public. Even if you're certain, "this person never was a customer" looks defensive. State what you can't find.
- Don't threaten legal action or expose their details. It escalates, and it scares off other reviewers. Keep any legal steps private.
- Don't ignore it and hope Google removes it. It may stay up. Without a reply, the only story readers have is the reviewer's.
